The Best Birthday Gift

Rosa was a housemaid. She worked for the Phillips, for the Grants, for the Riddles, for the Marquezs, for the Deodhars, for the Wesleys, for the D’Souzas and many more families living in the suburbs. She was a single working mother who did  other people’s house chores, looked after their children, cooked for the families, bought groceries; everything just so that her six year old daughter, Ellie could study and not end up working as a maid like her. Rosa had dreamt of all those dreams for Ellie which she had dreamt for herself.

Rosa and Ellie were not too poor but were not financially stable too. They often ran short of detergents and soaps or at times of basic food like vegetables and flour. Rosa tried her best ensuring that her their fridge was atleast stocked up with some milk and bread so that Ellie won’t starve if Rosa didn’t make it till dinner time.

One day Rosa was running late and asked her neighbour to pick up Ellie from school and bring her home. Once the neighbour left, Ellie poured herself a glass of milk and sat on the dining table with her feet dangling staring at the collaged wall which her mother and she had made together by pasting pictures of the places and things to do on their wish list. She saw the calendar and stared and stared. There was something peculiar about that day’s date. Ellie’s eyes lit up, “Its Mama’s birthday today!”

Ellie lapped up the milk and sprung out of the chair. She had decided what she wanted to do. She stacked all the papers and the books on the study table; she  neatly folded and kept the washed clothes back in the cupboard; she dusted the furniture and the TV; she peeped out of their apartment’s window wishing few flowers would be waiting for her in their tiny garden in the window. And there they were! She arranged the flowers in a pot and placed it on the dinning table.

She thought, “And now the final thing!” She hoped and hoped that she would find something in the fridge. She opened it to find it almost empty. No eggs, no butter, no jam, no fruits. She could see there was no flour either. She thought should she buy a small cup cake from the store across the street for her mother. She shook her head knowing her mother wouldn’t appreciate if Ellie used her money from her piggy bank on a cake. She stared at the blank fridge wondering what could she possibly do. She saw a small something wrapped in the corner of the fridge. She opened it to see that it was cheese. And then she saw some leftover bread. She smiled.

That night when Rosa came home all weary and tired she was amazed to see how neat their apartment looked. And there on the centre of the dinning table were some flowers, a lit candle and something in the plate and Ellie whose smiling face shone brighter than the candle. Rosa walked closer with tears in her eyes and smiled. There she saw two ketchupy eyes smiling at her from the cheese toast that Ellie had made for her.

Rosa hugged Ellie tight and said in shaky voice, “This is the best birthday gift I have ever got!”

Simple pleasurers of life

I was just sitting at the window having a cup of hot coffee, when a thought just brushed my mind…I just closed my eyes and visualized that I was siting at the window but not of my apartment but of a tiny shack built atop a hill amongst the farms and I had the green covered mountain and clouds kissing it and moving ahead for my company….it had just rained and the the mountain looked as if it was draped in a greeny robe… the wind sprayed the rain droplets on my face and left tiny diamond like drops in my hair… when I opened my eyes I felt rejuvenated…for those few seconds I was transferred to a peaceful place of my dreams….. This kind of day dreaming really helped me…i mean in our busy lives we get so much carried away by our work and get engulfed in the daily routine that we totally forget what we like..what we enjoy doing the most…we forget the simple pleasures of life… Forget what the world says…ignore if somebody laughs…just listen to your heart and take a trip down the memory lane…...

Hugging the Himalayas

*Crump*  *Crip* *Kudum*  The leaves and the twigs broke under my shoes. I was panting and puffing and sweating. Ashu dada called out, “We are almost there!”  I put my head down and kept climbing until there was no more to climb.   “Guys, you got to see this!”  I raised my head and lost my breath.  We were standing atop a hill overlooking the the magnificent snow mountains. The Dhauladhar range covered in white swept across our eyes. The sky was a true ‘sky blue’ and the sun shone on the tallest of the peaks.  I was in heaven!  And to prove that the cities lay on the other side cramped up like little ants.  At Triund  and Photograph by me :)  Once I had gotten my bag in my yellow tent I sat outside and lay on my back  watching the soft fluffy white clouds breeze by, taking in every bit of the snow wonder. The snow mountains looked no less than a bowl of vanilla ice cream sprinkled with choco chips...

The Old

O of #AtoZChallenge At night, when the world would be making it's bed, waiting to drop down, my Aaji would put on her transistor in her bedroom and listen to old Hindi songs on radio. Suddenly, everything would go quiet. A warm, fuzzy feeling would envelope our house. A smile would appear on our faces, the worried wrinkles on the foreheads would disappear and we would find ourselves going down the Old World Lane!  Ah! The eternal- Old World Charm! Even today when I hear any old Hindi song, my imagination turns into  black and white and I get transported right into the song!  If I have to revisit an era, I would travel to the 'black and white Mumbai' era. When the streets looked squeaky clean, the Victorian buildings at VT, Churchgate basked in it's full glory, Marine Drive and the Arabian Sea looked it's cleanest. During my time-travel, I can feel the warm wind blowing, making my tresses dance. I imagine life to be simpler with lesser choices, less...

FAiRYTALE

Just heard the song "LOVE STORY" by taylor swift....the lyrics go this way.... " Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone, I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do is run You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess... It’s a love story, baby, just say yes I got tired of waiting Wondering if you were ever coming around My faith in you was fading When I met you on the outskirts of town And I said Romeo save me, I’ve been feeling so alone, I keep waiting, for you but you never come, Is this in my head, I don’t know what to think He kneels to the ground and pulled out a ring and said Marry me Juliet, you’ll never have to be alone, I love you, and that’s all I really know, I talked to your dad-you’ll pick the white dress, It’s a love story, baby just say…yes…" and it took me to the "once upon a time" tales of the prince and the princess...their love for each other and the struggle they had to undertake to be together in the...

The Ghost in the House

“This house is just how you had described Mr. and Mrs Kruger!”, said the house broker.  Kris and Kate walked into the apartment and stared and stared.  The house had everything they had ever wanted- a living room just adequate enough to house Kate’s small library shelf in the corner and Kris’ editing machines and still have enough space for the seating when some extra friends came over to stay, a cozy bedroom with just enough light coming in, the perfect kitchen where they would cook together not too big not small, a bathroom good enough to fit a tub,  a balcony perfect to fit two chairs where Kate could make a tiny garden and where they could sip their morning coffee or have a glass of wine at night.  Kate whispered in awe, “This is it! This is just like a dream.!” The house broker smiled and added, “Surprisingly its just a little more than the half of what you had decided as your budget.”  Kate turned to Kris loo...
